How do I change, update, or downgrade my server version without losing data?

For Minecraft, the Software page is the one-click, canonical way to switch software or change your Minecraft version. Your world stays in place through the swap — but a good backup first is always the smart move, especially before a downgrade.

How version changes work

The Software page reinstalls the server software while keeping your world; any files it replaces are moved to a _previous folder. Upgrades are usually smooth; the risk lies in downgrades, where a world saved on a newer version may not open cleanly on an older one.

Changing your version safely

1. Back up first — click Back up now on your server's Backups page (you can also download a copy of your world and files via Files or SFTP).
2. Open the Software page (click the Version chip at the top of the console).
3. Pick your software (Vanilla, Paper, Spigot, Purpur, Fabric, Forge, NeoForge, Quilt, Folia, and more), then the Minecraft version and build.
4. Install, then restart from the Console tab.

Warning: Your world and files stay in place, but worlds don't always downgrade cleanly — going to an older version can corrupt a world saved on a newer one. Back up first, and see the Minecraft KB for version-specific caveats.
